Rekeying versus replacing

Rekeying changes which key operates a lock without changing the lock. The cylinder comes apart, the brass pins inside are swapped for a different combination of heights, and it goes back together matched to a new key. The hardware on the door is untouched — same finish, same fit, same holes, no visible change.

Replacing means new hardware entirely. That is the right call when a lock is worn out, when the security grade is inadequate, or when you want a different type of lock than what is fitted. It is the wrong call, and an expensive one, when the only real requirement is that an old key stops working.

For most situations — a new tenant, a move-in, a contractor who kept a key, a keyring lost somewhere unknown — rekeying does the whole job for a fraction of the cost. On a triple-decker with separate entry and unit doors, the difference across all the cylinders is usually substantial.

The coastal caveat nobody mentions

Rekeying assumes the cylinder is mechanically sound, and on a house near the water that assumption deserves checking first. Swapping pins into a corroded cylinder produces a new key that binds exactly like the old one did, and the customer reasonably concludes the locksmith did a poor job.

The check takes seconds. If the existing key needs any wiggle, if the plug turns roughly, or if there is visible green on the brass around the keyway, that cylinder wants replacing rather than rekeying. Interior doors and anything on the sheltered side of the building are usually fine.

This is the single most common place where a cheap quote turns into a wasted visit here. Being told up front that two of your four cylinders should be replaced rather than rekeyed is not an upsell — it is the difference between the work lasting and the work failing by spring.

Keying alike, and multi-unit buildings

Houses accumulate locks over decades and often end up with three or four different keys for one building. They can all be rekeyed to a single key in the same visit, provided the cylinders are compatible brands, and it adds very little to the labor because each cylinder is already being opened.

Fall River's triple-deckers make this more useful than in most housing stock. An owner-occupier with a rented top floor typically wants one key for the common entry and the basement, a separate key per unit, and one key of their own that opens everything. That is a small master key system, and it is planned before any cylinder is touched rather than improvised afterwards.

For landlords, the arrangement worth setting up is a standing rekey between tenancies rather than an emergency call each time someone leaves. Cylinders get rotated on a schedule and departing keys stop working without anyone waiting on a van.
