Master key systems, planned before anything is cut

A master key system lets one key open every door while each individual key opens only its own. Done well it is invisible to the people using it. Done badly it produces keys that unexpectedly open doors they should not, which is worse than having no system at all.

The planning is the work. Before any cylinder is pinned, the building needs a chart: which doors exist, who needs access to what, and how the hierarchy is structured. A small office needs two levels. A mixed-use building downtown might need a grand master, floor masters, and unit keys beneath them.

The other half of planning is expansion. A system pinned to exactly today's doors has no room for the door added next year. Leaving unused combinations available at the design stage costs nothing; retrofitting them later means repinning the building.

Exit devices and the code side

Commercial doors carry legal requirements residential doors do not. Egress has to work without a key, without special knowledge, and in a single motion — which is why panic bars exist, and why chaining a fire door shut is not an option regardless of the theft problem it solves.

Panic hardware and fire-rated doors get inspected, and the common failures are avoidable: a worn dogging mechanism that no longer latches, a door propped because the closer is too aggressive, or an added deadbolt above a panic bar that defeats the single-motion requirement entirely.

Where security genuinely conflicts with egress, the answer is a delayed-egress device or an alarmed exit rather than an added lock. Both keep the door legal while making unauthorised use obvious — and both are cheaper than the fine for a chained exit.

Waterfront and industrial premises
